Dating in the Aude, in the land of Cathar castles

In the Aude, fortress outlines stand against the blue sky: Cathar citadels perched on rocky peaks, the medieval Cité of Carcassonne, abbeys of pale stone. A département made for travelling together, between history, southern winds and stone paths.

The Cité of Carcassonne

Listed as UNESCO World Heritage, the Cité of Carcassonne, with its fifty-two towers and double curtain wall restored by Viollet-le-Duc, feels like the setting of a fairy tale. You enter on foot through the Porte Narbonnaise, walk the lists at dusk and dine inside the ramparts. A date here naturally gains in romance: the stones already tell plenty, and all that remains is to say the first few words.

Cathar castles and Fontfroide Abbey

In the south of the Aude, the so-called Cathar castles, Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Puilaurens and Aguilar, perch on dizzying ridges. The Cers wind sweeps the ruins, the view runs to the Corbières and sometimes to the sea. The Cistercian Abbey of Fontfroide, set in a cypress valley, offers a gentler pause with its cloisters and rose garden. The idea of a shared loop is quietly compelling.

Lagrasse, Minerve and Mirepoix

Listed among the most beautiful villages of France, Lagrasse unfolds its abbey and medieval bridge in the Orbieu valley. Minerve, another village set above its gorges, and Mirepoix with its medieval arcaded square round out the map of shared getaways. On Lyad, Audois singles share their favourite paths and guesthouses; it is up to you to find someone to extend the road with.
